Biodiveristy and Climate Adaptation
The meeting will be devoted to a workshop on climate adaptation for the railway, including nature-based solutions. The workshop will be led by RIA with the support of Nikki Kent, Senior Consultant Climate Change Resilience at Arup and Damien Canning, Carbon Lead at BAM.
Lisa Constable, Head of Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation at Network Rail will also give a presentation.
Workshop Outline - Climate Adaptation for the Railway
Our railway is the backbone of sustainable transport in Great Britain - the greenest way for millions to travel across the country. But it faces a growing challenge, as extreme weather and climate change put increasing pressure on the resilience, reliability, and safety of our rail network.
In the week that the Department for Transport publish a new Climate adaptation strategy for transport, it is timely that RIA are partnering with members Arup and BAM to stage a workshop to focus on this issue.
We will be discussing climate adaptation and nature-based solutions and asking how we can work together better on climate resilience for the rail industry.
This workshop will offer a focused, collaborative space to exchange ideas, explore emerging opportunities, and tackle pressing challenges on adaptation to climate change, while forging relationships that will drive meaningful change in the rail sector.
Discussion topics
We ask you to consider the following questions in advance of the event to ensure a valuable and insightful discussion:
1. Climate risk in the rail sector
How have your projects been affected by climate risks, and what lessons have been learnt?
2. Beyond tomorrow
What can we do to deliver more climate-resilient rail infrastructure and overcome potential challenges?
3. Future collaboration
How can we build the partnerships and share the experience that will future-proof the rail sector?
We will discuss each of these topics in turn, and there will also be a short presentation on the BAM adaptation solutions library, recently developed by Arup to support BAM's 2030 target to integrate climate adaptation measures into all projects, ensuring that they are resilient and sustainable from the outset.
