Rail Project SPEED Workshop-PACE, Standards and Timetabling

Rail Project SPEED: Workshop – PACE, Standards and Timetabling
Thursday 20 May 2021
12.45 – 5pm, Online

Following the highly successful Rail SPEED Conference on 26 February, introduced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Network Rail and the Railway Industry Association (RIA) are holding a FREE follow-up event to explore some of the work that underpins SPEED in more detail.

The workshop will look at the PACE (Project Acceleration in a Controlled Environment), Standards Challenge and Timetabling workstreams, and build on the cross-industry engagement from the February conference.

PACE is the new project management framework, replacing GRIP, that allows project managers to adapt their approach, make decisions that best meet the needs of their project and overlay stages while maintaining rigour.

The Standards workstream is looking at how NR and its supply chain can get better at working with and challenging existing standards which could reduce the time and cost these can add to programme delivery.
Timetabling is not considered early enough in many programmes which can lead to challenges, such as when there are changes to delivering a programme that could conflict with the time trains are timetabled to run on the network. This theme is looking to develop an operational industry timetable plan that will mean any changes to a programme’s scope are assessed at the earliest opportunity against the agreed plan. This will also help provide more rigour for projects making business cases for their work, as regardless of a project’s complexity, decisions will be informed by an integrated timetable with a national overview.
The May workshop will provide the opportunity for industry partners to learn more, help them apply SPEED principles to their own work and help further develop the workstreams. The workshop is open to all in the rail industry and FREE to attend.

This event is open to all and will follow a session held on the morning of 20 May by Rail Forum Midlands looking at PACE. The session will be led by Tim Walden and Mike Wright of Network Rail who are championing these two key initiatives, it will provide a practical perspective on progress to date together with next steps. The Rail Forum Midlands event, which is also open to all, can be found here.

What is Rail SPEED?

A joint approach between NR and DfT, SPEED’s mission is to “halve the time and reduce the cost” of delivering improvements to the railway, safely. In doing so it will make our industry more agile, more dynamic, help us put passengers first and deliver better value for taxpayers.

SPEED is empowering all of us in rail to be revolutionary in our thinking - to challenge how we do things and ask, how could we do this better?

SPEED will give us the right mindset, and tools, to drive this change, and to demonstrate we are a dependable industry that is efficient and easy to engage with.
