UK railway suppliers are invited to join a Trade Mission to India to meet key players, explore new opportunities and to exhibit at the International Railway Equipment Exhibition and Conference, 2023. The mission is jointly organised by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Railway Industry Association (RIA).
Background
- Indian rail network is currently the fourth largest in the world after the US, China, and Russia, spanning over about 65,000 route km. Growing passenger and freight traffic at nearly 8% per annum has necessitated continuous upgrading and expansion and the need for significant investment.
- Rail infrastructure is expected to see an investment of £500 billion by 2030.
- In this year’s Union Budget, a capital outlay of £23 billion has been allocated to the Ministry of Railways, which is the highest ever outlay in any year.
- Key focus areas of investment include network upgrade & expansion, electrification, safety, railway station redevelopment, improved efficiency, and speed through modernisation of rolling stock and High-Speed Rail projects.
- In addition, India has an ambitious plan to develop metro rail systems in almost all major Indian cities to address growing urbanization. Currently projects with an estimated value of nearly £11 billion are approved and many more are in the pipeline. The significant value of these projects is open to international bidding.
- Opportunities for UK companies exist across the rail value chain, spanning from engineering design & consulting, which is dominated by international companies, to product and technology solutions in track electrification systems, signaling & telecommunications, rolling stock, depot & maintenance supplies, and railways station development.
