India
The rail network is currently the fourth largest in the world after the US, China and Russia, spanning over about 65,000 route km.  Growing passenger and freight traffic at nearly 8% per annum has necessitated continuous upgrading and expansion and the need for significant investment.

The Indian finance minister in her recent budget announcement estimated an investment of £500 billion in Indian Railways between 2018 and 2030.

Indian Railways envisages an investment of £100 billion for modernisation and up gradation in the next five years. Key focus areas include network upgrade & expansion, electrification, safety, railway station redevelopment, improved efficiency and speed through modernisation & increased supply of rolling stock and High Speed Rail projects.

In addition, India has an ambitious plan to develop metro rail systems in almost all major Indian cities to address growing urbanization.  Currently projects with an estimated value of nearly £14 billion are approved and many more are in the pipeline. Significant value of these projects is open to international bidding.

Opportunities for UK companies exist across the rail value chain, spanning from engineering design & consulting, which is dominated by international companies, to product and technology solutions in track electrification,  systems, signalling & telecommunications, rolling stock, depot & maintenance supplies and railways station development.
