Furrer+Frey

The IMAGE project has electrified the railway industry. Our innovative project utilises advanced composite materials and manufacturing techniques to revolutionise the way we build electrification. Replacing heavy steel masts with lightweight, environmentally friendly alternatives, we have significantly reduced the cost of infrastructure and carbon impact. This ground-breaking design resulted in the smallest piled foundations ever installed on UK railway electrification, meaning less disruption, more productivity, faster installation times and less embodied carbon. Our structures have 20% of the mass and 25% of the embodied carbon of conventional masts. But that's not all! Automatic structural condition monitoring system ensures that maintenance is always pre-emptive, removing the need for physical visits and costly repossessions. This not only makes rail electrification safer and more reliable but also significantly reduces whole-life costs. Our project is a game-changer, and we are confident that it is a suitable candidate for an RIA RISE Award. So, join us on the electrifying journey towards more cost-efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly rail electrification!

Network Rail (Partnered with - see diagram)

In June 2022, working closely with the DfT, Network Rail secured £10m of funding through the Foreign & Commonwealth Development Office. The package was designed for immediate use without the need for UK personnel to be in country. It allows for repair of infrastructure and stock piling of stores to allow UZ to react to emergency infrastructure needs. Network Rail, Amco-Giffen, Mabey Bridge, Mabeyhire and JCB worked collaboratively to specify, procure, and deliver the above. Two trains loaded with 1100 tonnes of aid were delivered by DB Cargo to Ukraine in December 2022 and February 2023. The transit involved significant liaison with customs, Channel Tunnel, and High Speed 1 by Eversheds and ALS. Further to this, the team worked closely with HMRC to secure a zero VAT rating. This allowed for further aid. Seldom does a project make a real and measurable impact over the lives of a nation. The provision of the aid has improved the resilience of the Ukraine Railway, thus facilitating the free flow of humanitarian aid, grain exports, movement of passengers and the resilience of the Ukraine economy. In turn this reduces the risk to global food supplies, saves lives and reduces economic and societal harm.

Siemens

This entry is about how we are going beyond investment in infrastructure to put ourselves right at the heart of the community in Goole. It highlights how we’re making a positive contribution to social value by supporting projects in three specific areas: Education and STEM; Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; and Community Outreach to make a difference to people’s lives. It also demonstrates how our people, both here in Goole and from the wider Siemens Mobility team, are embracing playing an active role in the local community – with employees at all levels volunteering their time, skills and passion.

The Tree Council

Six million trees grow along the UK’s 20,000 miles of railway – a long, thin slice of Britain that brings huge benefits for the environment, communities, and the economy. Over the past five years, Network Rail and The Tree Council (the national charity that brings everyone together to care for trees) have been working in partnership. We have shown how engaging with communities and doing the right thing for nature, can reduce costs, help maintain rail safety and safeguard our green heritage. Our success stems from two things: The Tree Council’s ‘critical friendship’, offering constant challenge, expert advice and innovative thinking to Network Rail, plus a four-year community planting programme, which has established 254,752 trees, with 108 communities, including more than 1,000 volunteer hours. The partnership has saved Network Rail many hundreds of thousands of pounds in tree management costs, while local communities benefit from biodiversity net gain, increased carbon sequestration, habitat protection, attenuated flooding and improved air quality. This collaboration of a large public body with a small, entrepreneurial charity (just 20 employees) is improving wellbeing in underserved communities and conserving wildlife for generations to come. Winning would inspire us to ever greener success!

Trainline

Every day, we’re bombarded with drastic actions needed to meet our climate targets, but these tactics can leave people feeling scared or overwhelmed. Trainline introduced ‘I Came By Train’ a more manageable way to make an impact. If we all switched just one car or plane journey to a train journey, every year, we could collectively save millions of tonnes of CO2.
