The Railway Industry Association (RIA), the national trade body for the rail supply community, to the Government's announcement that work has started on the next stage of Midland Mainline electrification. David Clarke, Technical Director at the Railway Industry Association, said: “Seeing construction begin on the next stage of upgrading the Midland Mainline is a welcome step towards fully electrifying the line. This would provide faster, more reliable and cleaner journeys for millions of passengers travelling through the Midlands, as well as increased capacity on an important railway. “As a clean mode of transport, rail has a critical role to play in reaching the UK’s net zero targets through modal shift, however the industry must continue to decarbonise and, crucially, build more capacity. That is why we must get on with electrifying more of the UK’s railways as soon as possible, delivering a better railway for passengers and supporting jobs in a green industry.”
