Silver Fox has partnered up with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) to bring you a new podcast, Engineering Stories.
Silver Fox have reached their first milestone of 10 episodes on their podcast so far. Engineering Stories is a chance for engineers to discuss with Alex and his co-host, their route into engineering. Along the way, a number of funny and momentous memories are shared, giving a real insight into life as an engineer.
The first 10 episodes already show the diversity within this industry. Episode 9 stars Simon Whitehouse. Simon is Certification Director for Ricardo Certification. Ricardo Certification operates independently within the Ricardo group, to provide independent assurance and testing services in rail and other sectors.
Simon tells us about his work at Ricardo, where they’re looking into engineering solutions to help improve the environment. He also shares some incredible stories from his time as an engineer in the Royal Navy, after starting as an artificer apprentice at HMS Fisgard in Torpoint. He comments on some myths about engineering, such as the idea that you must be brilliant at maths. For this, Simon responds by saying “some of the best engineers I know are some of the worst mathematicians I’ve ever met!”. He gives some fantastic advice to young people interested in engineering; particularly those who are put off due to the misleading information they are given and/or the lack of information they are given about engineering.
Simon said: “As long as you’re not completely put off by maths, you will be just fine. You just have to be inquisitive about engineering and what makes things work.”
