James Bain is the CEO of Worldline in the UK&I. Worldline is a global paytech company with operations in over 50 countries where they process over £400bn of electronic payments every year. James has responsibility for the UK&I which covers many markets from retail to hospitality to transport. Worldline’s work in the transport market is very focused on rail where they provide services to Train Operating Companies, Network Rail, Rail Delivery Group, Rail Safety & Standards Board, Freight Operators and ROSCO’s.

James started his career with Virgin Trains in 1999 where he implemented the UK’s first on board EPOS system, James moved through various roles including Revenue Management and Commercial bid planning. In 2007 James moved to Arriva Cross Country where he was Director of Revenue with responsibility for all pricing, revenue management, demand forecasting and ticket retailing. In 2010 James founded redspottedhanky.com to retail train tickets online, James moved to work for Atos Origin. In 2012 Worldline was carved out of Atos where James lead the UK separation and over the following eight years James moved through various local and global roles from Strategy, Delivery and Business Development. In March 2020 James took o the CEO role he holds today.

In addition to James’ CEO role he is also the Industry Champion for the Data & Mobility Pillar which is a key part of the Rail Sector Deal. With this James Chairs the Rail Data Council which has secured £5m on a match funding basis from DfT for the implementation of a British Rail Data Market place, in fact this lines up and supports Commitment 56 of the Williams Shapps plan for rail.

Through the Pandemic James was integral to founding Rail Aid in support of the Railway Children, James Chairs the Rail Aid Committee which together have lead fundraising totalling £1.2m to the end of 2021. Rail Aid will be back in 2022 and along with the Railway Ball will be looking to raise more funds for Street Children the world over.
